We get calls all the time with customers in a Panic, they have just replaced there screen on there iPhone or had there screen replaced and when they went to look at there pictures after the fact, they were no where to be found! Now when they plug there phone into iTunes it shows the pictures are there but they are marked as other but yet are still no where to be found on the phone.
This my friends is obviously a HUGE problem before we begin there are some preventitive steps that MUST be taken.
Note: This will also fix most issues if your camera roll becomes corrupt for any reason and displays in iTunes as other.
PROCEED WITH CAUTION: This works for us multiple times a week but we can not be held resposible for a damaged iPhone this tutorial works in most cases but you must follow the first 2 steps just in case any thing goes wrong or you delete the wrong file.
1. Back up your phone to iTunes as we will be messing with the file system
2. For this tutorial we will be using iFunBox although there are others out there this is the one we like to use. To download just click the link and download for either Mac or Windows.
Once you have downloaded and installed, you will plug your phone in with the lost pictures and you will see it come up with a camera icon possibly multiple icons will have all of your pictures in it. Create a New folder and select all the pictures and drag them into this new Folder (This is just for Safety as i said earlier we will be messing with the file system and you want to have these backed up in case anything goes wrong)
Once you have taken care of all the backup and saftey issues we can move on to restoring them photos. The Fist thing that you will do is in iFunBox click on the left side Raw File system. Then you will click photo data.
Once you click Photo Data it will bring up a screen that looks like this or a variation of this.
The File that is selected above is the culprit here its photos.sqlite
First things first copy this file to your desktop (just to have backed up)
then to fix your photos you just need to delete this file.
If deleting this file does not work there are two others you must delete 99% of the time deleting the above file works:
Once this file has been deleted all you need to do to recover your beloved pictures is unplug and power off and then back on your phone. Once your phone is back on go to the camera roll it may still be blank at first just give it a few minutes and all of your photos will slowly start to restore depending on how many you have and like magic you are done!
